Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

How many sessions does it generally take before I feel better or see improvements?

There are no two brains that are the same. As a result, the therapist will need to customize the training to your specific brain and the challenges that you are experiencing. It isn't possible to predict the number of sessions however, most individuals need a minimum of 20 sessions before changes are noticeable. Your therapist will work with you to ensure that you obtain the correct amount of sessions needed.

Are you putting electricity or other things into my brain?

No! The sensors placed on the scalp simply read the brainwaves your brain is already making - the same way a doctor would monitor your breathing with a stethoscope. Neurofeedback training provides feedback for your brain to change itself.

How does neurofeedback training help me outside of your office in the real world?

Neurofeedback training is like yoga for your brain, it provides feedback to your brain and teaches the brain to be flexible and adjust to the task you are asking it to perform. Neurofeedback utilizes classical and operant conditioning. Through repeated training, new neural pathways are created so that one may regulate one's emotional and physical state in an optimal way. The brain is an organ that looks for efficiency. Once you have experienced positive effects from the neurofeedback training, the brain will begin to operate in a rhythm that uses the most amount of efficiency, i.e. the least amount of work/ energy to complete the most amount of tasks.

How can neurofeedback be useful for so many issues?

The brain is the body's control center. It is responsible for controlling many of the systems in the body. Some of these systems include the limbic system, hormones, sleep, attention, insulin etc.

Will neurofeedback cure all my issues?

Neurofeedback has proven to be extremely successful and useful for improving and stabilising a variety of conditions however, much like any therapy or medication it is not a "cure all". In some cases, neurofeedback coupled with other environmental changes and or talk therapy will provide optimal results.

Can I be on medications while doing neurofeedback training?

Yes, most medications do not interfere with neurofeedback training. There are a small minority of medications that could affect your training. Your therapist will do a thorough assessment prior to starting training.
