Trauma-informed training for the people who care for others

I partner with hospitals, shelters, first responder services, and organizations of all kinds to help staff understand the impact of trauma and stress. The result is a workforce that is better protected, and people who receive safer, more compassionate care.

The problem

A nurse finishes a twelve-hour shift and finds herself replaying a patient's final hour on the drive home. A shelter worker hears another account of violence and realizes she feels strangely numb. An officer returns from a difficult call and is withdrawing from his spouse and kids  over something small. A manager steers her team through yet another restructuring while her own reserves quietly run dry.

On the other side of each of these interactions is someone who is also struggling: a frightened patient, a resident who has learned to distrust anyone in authority, a person in crisis on one of the worst nights of their life. How they are met in that moment can either steady them or deepen the harm.

Most organizations recognize this. The harder question is what to do about it.

The weight of this work doesn't stay at work

Why this matters for the people you serve

Calm is contagious, and so is stress

Our nervous systems are designed to take cues from one another. When someone is frightened, angry, or overwhelmed, they instinctively look to the people around them for signals of safety. Clinicians call this co-regulation, and it begins in infancy. A staff member who is grounded can help a distressed person settle. A staff member who is depleted or on edge may, without intending to, escalate the situation.

For this reason, staff wellbeing and quality of care can't be treated as separate goals. When your team understands trauma, a patient's anger, a resident's refusal, or a caller's panic stops looking like a personal attack. It becomes recognizable as a stress response, and your staff can respond with more skill and less reactivity.

People with trauma histories are frequently retraumatized by the very systems meant to support them. Rushed interactions, a loss of control, or the sense of not being believed can echo the original harm. Trauma-informed training helps your staff avoid these ruptures, so the people you serve leave feeling respected and understood.

Who I train

Hospitals and healthcare teams

Patients who feel safe are more likely to disclose what is really happening, engage in their care, and return when they need help. I help healthcare teams recognize how fear and past trauma influence patient and family behaviour, and how to respond in ways that build trust. Staff also learn to identify the early signs of compassion fatigue in themselves.

Shelters and community agencies

Many of the people you serve have been failed by nearly every system they have encountered. I help staff interpret residents' behaviour through a trauma-informed lens, so boundaries and expectations can be upheld without feeling like another rejection. Your team also learns how to carry what they witness without it following them home.

Police, fire, paramedics and first responders

First responders meet people at moments that are often remembered for a lifetime. My sessions explore how trauma shapes behaviour during a crisis, and how an informed approach can make encounters safer and less harmful for everyone involved. We also speak candidly about the cumulative effects of repeated exposure and what genuinely supports recovery.

Corporate and professional workplaces

Stress moves through organizations in ways that affect clients, customers, and colleagues alike. I help leaders recognize burnout early, navigate difficult conversations, and build the psychological safety that allows people to speak up and do their best work. That culture inevitably shapes how your organization treats the people it serves.

Government, education and public services

Staff who work with the public encounter stress and trauma every day, whether or not it is named. I help client-facing teams make sense of what they are seeing and respond in ways that de-intensify rather than inflame. The goal is that people leave feeling respected, even when the answer is no.

About me

Why I do this work

I'm Lori Borden, a Registered Social Worker, psychotherapist, and founder of The Therapy Team.

For more than fifteen years, I have worked with people in the aftermath of profound adversity: traumatic loss, domestic violence, abuse, and the stress that accumulates over a career in the helping professions. Many were nurses, first responders, and frontline workers. More than one told me they wished someone had explained all of this to them years earlier.

That is much of what led me to training. I kept seeing two sides of the same problem. Helpers were burning out, and the people they served were being harmed in the process. The science of trauma and stress speaks to both. I translate it into clear, practical language, grounded in real examples and free of unnecessary jargon.

To add: organizations trained, credentials, speaking experience.
